My 18-Year-Old Siamese Cat Schascho’s Journey with Hyperthyroidism My 18-year-old Siamese cat, Schascho, was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism two years ago. Initially, we started medical treatment, but she did not tolerate the medication well. As a result, her doctors had to constantly adjust the dosages and even switch the active ingredient multiple times. After two years of trying to stabilize her condition, Prof. Dr. Boretti from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Zurich (Department of Endocrinology) recommended Dr. Pilar Xifra at the Iodocat Clinic. This clinic offers scintigraphy for cats and can administer an individually tailored dose of Iodine-131. As a medical doctor in human medicine, I conducted in-depth research and discovered that Iodocat is the only clinic in Europe currently offering scintigraphy for cats. Schascho underwent treatment and stayed in isolation for only 1.5 days afterward. She also received blood pressure medication as part of her post-treatment care. In contrast, most other German-speaking countries offer only two standard doses of Iodine-131, with isolation lasting 5–9 days, no visits allowed, and no additional medications available during the stay. Dr. Xifra and her entire team are not only extremely experienced and professional, but also warm, caring, and genuinely kind. The treatment was a complete success. Following pre-treatment lab analyses on January 13th, we flew to Madrid. We stayed at a pet-friendly hotel, and the next day I handed Schascho over to Dr. Xifra and her team. After the treatment, Dr. Xifra provided me with comprehensive documentation, including the exact dose of Iodine-131 administered—useful in case of a Geiger counter check at the airport. We returned home on Thursday. The follow-up exams after one and three months showed completely normal thyroid hormone levels. Schascho no longer needs anti-thyroid medication, has stopped vomiting, and has started to gain weight. She now weighs 2800g—up from only 2500g before treatment. Sadly, during those two years of unstable thyroid levels, despite our best efforts, Schascho developed hypertension. Even with antihypertensive medication, she developed chronic degenerative retinopathy, which is unfortunately irreversible. She is now completely blind. For this reason, I strongly recommend Iodine-131 treatment with Dr. Pilar Xifra at the Iodocat Clinic before any complications develop. Please do not hesitate to make an informational appointment with Dr. Xifra—and don’t waste precious time. Finally, my deepest thanks to Dr. Pilar Xifra, Eva Serrano, Irene,Angela, Sara, and Belèn and the entire team for their loving care and for giving Schascho the opportunity to be free from hyperthyroidism. We had a beautiful and successful experience with Iodocat team and dr Pilar, of course an experience where I took the responsibility for Eli's(one of my two cats) treatment with radioactive iodine. Sure, I was afraid for Eli, we went in Madrid for this treatment all the way from Romania, there were difficult challenges along the way including transport(by car, bus, plane, train, metro... anything but boat really), a hotel that is pet friendly, sand for litter box(because without having sand Eli refused to pee for almost 27 hours until she peed in the middle of the hotel bed while I was taking a shower :)), but the hotel staff were also very nice and they said that's why they charge an extra fee for pets-in case these things happen). Dr Pilar explained very detailed the procedure, the possible outcomes, the measures and analysis that I have to take before and after the treatment. She explained by email and I signed contracts that I understood and accepted the treatment. Even though I read that it may be a difficult treatment for Eli, then 10-11 years old, now she is 11-12 years old, I decided to try, because otherwise I had to give her pills for the rest of her life... pills that she already hated after 2 months, more of this... pills that can affect my life as a fertile woman... for the next 10 years(supposedly). So I chose to try this treatment that would affect me and her only for 3 months maximum.... more strict in the first 3 weeks and then more relaxed. While she had the treatment I could see her on camera... I didn't even sleep much those 2 nights, I woke up from time to time to see if I can see her or if she was hiding somewhere... but I had faith in dr Pilar and I saw that her staff was also very empathic and friendly with animals... as I write this review 1 year after the treatment, they really remained in my memory as good veterinarians and care givers for animals. Eli is thankfully very well, as she started to gain weight after the treatment(because she was very skinny like any hyperthyroidic cat) - I started to call her "my Spanish Bulldog" as a joke made with love. I hope this review will help other cat friends to take their own decisions on their own responsibility for helping their pet friend and their quality of life. The most difficult part for our journey was the transport(and the noises of transportation) but even so, if it would be the need I would do that again anytime 🙂

Acudir a vuestro equipo ha sido todo un éxito. Gracias a vuestro trabajo seguimos disfrutando de la compañía de nuestro pequeño y en todo momento nos hemos sentido maravillosamente atendidos y asesorados. Todo ello sin mencionar el trato tan cariñoso que le habéis dado a Fraggle en todo momento. Donde hay amor, se nota. No podemos estar las agradecidos.

No lo borres es la verdad. La llevé con unos análisis perfectos, menos el hipertiroidismo y me la entregan en un hilo de vida. Se perfectamente que podían haber realizado otra actuación como hidratarla con un suero que se lo pedimos, dale de cualquier forma agua para que estuviera hidratada. En el caso extremo que sucedió, llevarla a otra clínica y salvarla como le pedimos que la tratara como alguien se su familia y no lo hicieron nada de nada hasta que estaba agonizando y nos la entregan en ese estado. Señores/as de GOOGLE ESA ES LA REALIDAD QUE INTENTAN TAPAR. Y no es ninguna mentira tengo pruebas que avalan lo que digo. El sentimiento de culpa por dejarla ahí es irreparable.

Desde hace años han cuidado de mis dos gatitos. Solo tengo palabras de agradecimiento a todo el equipo de veterinarias y auxiliares,en especial a Eva por su cariño, paciencia, cercanía y profesionalidad. No podríamos tener mejor equipo al frente de la salud de nuestros peques.
